International Women’s Day 2017
On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, and in the framework of the initiative “She decides”, the Luxembourg Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Romain Schneider, and his colleagues from Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Estonia and Portugal published a joint op-ed “To us: she decides” in international newspapers on the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls.
The eight countries, who attach high importance to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, highlight that women’s and girls’ full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and their access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education are key priorities in development policy. They reaffirm their firm conviction that a woman has the right to choose with whom she wants to start a family, when and if she wants to have children and how many children she wants.
“She decides” is also the name of the global fundraising initiative taken by the Netherlands and which seeks to gather political and financial support for international organisations and NGOs in the field of women’s rights and health, in particular family planning. At an international conference held last week in Brussels with representatives of over 50 countries, Minister Schneider announced a contribution of 2 million euros, to be channeled through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which Luxembourg already supports with a voluntary contribution of over 5 million euros per year.
