Minister Jean Asselborn attends the D-ISIL Ministerial and the Iraq Reconstruction Conference in Kuwait

Published Wednesday February 14 2018

The Luxembourg Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, was in Kuwait on February 13th and 14th, 2018, where he attended the Ministerial Meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIL. Minister Asselborn reiterated Luxembourg’s commitment to the fight against Daesh and noted that, “to avoid the reemergence of Daesh in Iraq, a comprehensive political agreement and an inclusive governance which reflects the religious and ethnic diversity of Iraq is needed.”

Minister Asselborn also participated in the International Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq, which was co-chaired by Kuwait, Iraq, the European Union, the United Nations and the World Bank. The Minister stressed that “we have to ensure that the next generation of Iraqis does not inherit the burden of reconstruction (…) Together with the Iraqi authorities, we must seek to bridge the gaps in our response between emergency support and long-term recovery and find long-term solutions”.

Luxembourg will continue its support within the framework of its multi-year funding agreements with the World Food Program, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the UN Refugee Agency, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Luxembourg will also make a first contribution to the Iraq Humanitarian Fund managed by OCHA.
