Ambassador Lucas and her Benelux colleagues at the Benelux Day in Atlanta

Published Monday December 03 2018

On 3 December, Ambassador Sylvie Lucas of Luxembourg, Ambassador Henne Schuwer of the Netherlands and Ambassador Dirk Wouters of Belgium marked in Atlanta, Georgia, the 60th anniversary of the Benelux Union.

At a number of events organized by the Belgian-American Chamber of the South and the Netherlands-American Chamber of Commerce Southeast, in cooperation with the Consul General of Belgium and the Honorary Consul of Luxembourg, the Ambassadors highlighted how the three Benelux countries have made great social and economic gains by sharing part of their sovereignty. The Benelux Union is a model of political and economic integration and a building block of the European Union. The days’ events were also an opportunity to discuss EU – US relations, as well as internal developments in the European Union, for which the Benelux often serves as a laboratory of ideas for deeper integration.
