Published Tuesday June 18 2019

On 18 June, Ambassador Sylvie Lucas hosted the Luxembourg community from the Washington DC region as well as diplomats from other Embassies and representatives of the US administration to celebrate Luxembourg’s National Day. In her remarks, Ambassador Lucas highlighted the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landing and quoted from the Proclamation of the Allied Leaders adopted at the occasion of the D-Day commemorations on 5-6 June in the UK and in France. The Ambassador paid tribute to the late Grand Duke Jean, who passed away in April this year at the age of 98. Grand Duke Jean, who had joined the Irish Guards, had landed in Normandy on 11 June 1944. She also highlighted the upcoming 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the largest land battle fought by the American forces in the European theater during World War II, in the Northern and Eastern part of Luxembourg and the Belgian Ardennes. The ceremony concluded with the traditional singing of the Luxembourg, the European Union and the US anthems.
