From April 11-13, Finance Minister Pierre Gramegna participated in the annual Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, which focused this year inter alia on the fight against climate change and on the promotion of sustainable finance. In this context, Luxembourg co-organized on April 12, 2019, together with UN Environment, aseminar entitled “Accelerating Change: Let’s make it happen! The role of financial centers in promoting strong, sustainable and balanced growth”.

In the margins of the seminar, Minister Gramegna signed an agreement to financially support the “International Network of Financial Centres for Sustainability (FC4S), a partnership between the world’s financial centres and UN Environment that aims to increase green and sustainable finance. The FC4S has currently 22 members from Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, which are all committed to shifting their investments to support the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. Minister Gramegna emphasised that “Luxembourg is stepping up its commitment to support the efforts of the FC4S” and that “this commitment is aimed at helping the FC4S to better connect financial centres, to foster exchange of knowledge and thus help shaping the trends and developments that will define sustainable finance in the years to come”.

Luxembourg’s commitment to financial innovation and sustainable finance has led to the launch of a wide range of initiatives, including the first Stock Exchange dedicated to green, socially responsible and sustainable securities : the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX) in 2016.
