Minister Jean Asselborn at the luncheon of the EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, participated in the working luncheon of the 28 EU Foreign Ministers with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson which took place in Brussels on 5 December 2017.

Chaired by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, the discussions addressed transatlantic cooperation in the face of global challenges. In this context, the Luxembourg Foreign Minister stressed that “a close transatlantic cooperation and a strong partnership between the EU and the US are more important than ever”. He recalled that it is important to “reaffirm our common values”.

During their luncheon, the EU Ministers and the Secretary of State touched upon the latest developments in the Middle East, the situation in Syria, policy vis-à-vis Russia, cooperation with Ukraine as well as tensions on the Korean peninsula. 

The Ministers underlined that the EU and the US are strategic partners and share values, principles and common interests to jointly address global challenges. Jean Asselborn insisted on the importance of an “approach based on multilateralism to face global challenges, in particular climate change and migration”.

The meeting was also an opportunity to highlight the importance of a continued rigorous implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement, the JCPOA.
