This week, His Royal Highness the Grand Duke received a delegation of cadets from the United States Military Academy, West Point, at the Royal Palace in Luxembourg. The future officers are currently undertaking a European tour dedicated to the remembrance of the Second World War. They began their visits in Auschwitz—symbol of some of the darkest chapters in human history—and they will conclude their tour in Normandy to mark the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings. The Head of State and the cadets exchanged views on their respective experiences at West Point and at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where the Grand Duke received his military training. Grand Duke Guillaume also emphasized the importance of European values such as peace, freedom, and cooperation, recalling the sacrifice of thousands of young American soldiers who fought for the liberation of Europe. Among West Point’s alumni are General of the Army and 34th President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as General George S. Patton, a leading U.S. commander during the Second World War, who is laid to rest at the American Military Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg.
