Working at the MFA 

Any job vacancy at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade (MFA) (all careers) is published on the Govjobs.lu website. Individuals with an interest in working for the MFA are therefore invited to check the website regularly, where they will be guided through the application submission procedure.

Traineeships

Every year, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs offers students enrolled at a higher education establishment the opportunity to take part in a traineeship within the department in Luxembourg or at one of the diplomatic network’s embassies and representations abroad.

Duration of the traineeship

 A traineeship may last between several weeks and a maximum of 6 months, except for placements that are part of a university course of study, where this duration may be exceeded.

The Embassy of Luxembourg to the USA (Washington, D.C.) is recruiting an economic and trade advisor (m/f)
permanent contract with immediate effect 40h/week

As an economic and trade advisor your work will include, but is not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Monitor, analyze, and report on both the legislative process and broader policy developments in trade, general economic policy, technology, and industry in the United States (at federal and local levels), as well as, to a lesser extent, in Mexico;
  • Provide advice on issues affecting Luxembourg companies operating in the United States and Mexico, and support U.S. and Mexican companies engaging with Luxembourg;
  • Contribute to the development of the business network and identify partnership and growth opportunities;
  • Participate in external events, meetings, and working groups;
  • Prepare briefing materials on economic, trade, technology and industry-related topics;
  • Assist in the organization of meetings and visits, including those involving high-level government and business delegations;
  • Support the planning and delivery of business-related events.


Your qualifications / requirements:

  • University degree in economics, finance, law or a related field, a graduate degree is preferred;
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience (e.g. Capitol Hill, economic policy analysis, think tanks, economic journalism, diplomatic missions, or similar fields);
  • Full professional fluency in English, with excellent drafting and communication skills; working knowledge/fluency of French and/or Spanish considered an asset ;
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States (U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work visa);
  • Strong proficiency in information technology, and latest AI-powered applications, as well as social media;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure;
  • Flexible, adaptable, and capable of thinking creatively.

The Embassy of Luxembourg to the USA (Washington D.C.)
is recruiting Interns

4 to 6 months
40 hours/ week


The Embassy of Luxembourg to the USA represents the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg vis-à-vis the U.S. authorities, defends Luxembourg's interests in the U.S., and maintains and develops intergovernmental relations with the institutions of the host country, particularly in the political, economic, and cultural spheres. It is also the point of contact for a range of administrative services and consular matters for Luxembourg nationals who have settled in the United States.
As an intern, you will support the embassy in analyzing the political, economic, and social situation in the U.S. and the federal states, insofar as this is relevant to bilateral relations. In addition, you will assist the embassy team with administrative tasks.

Your duties (amongst others):

  • Support meeting preparation: conduct background research on individuals, organizations, or companies that the Ambassador or Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) meet with and prepare briefing notes for official meetings and events.
  • Networking follow-up: maintain and update records of contacts made by the Ambassador and DCM to ensure smooth follow-up and relationship management.
  • Economic and business research: Identify and analyze U.S. companies with existing or potential ties to Luxembourg, particularly in defense and technology sectors, to support economic diplomacy initiatives and future cooperation opportunities.
  • Policy and think tank monitoring: attend online discussions, panels, and events organized by think tanks; summarize key takeaways and report relevant insights back to the Embassy team.
  • Media monitoring: prepare daily press reviews covering developments in both the United States and Luxembourg to keep the Embassy leadership informed

    Your qualifications / requirements:
  • You are enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program
  • You are responsible and eager to learn
  • You are fluent in English, German, and French; Luxembourgish is considered an advantage
  • You are proficient in common IT tools (Microsoft Word, Excel)
