Participation of Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in an informal video conference with John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate
Friday, 22 January 2021 - Minister Jean Asselborn participated today in an informal meeting of the EU Commission and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 27 EU Member States with the Former Secretary of State John Kerry, now U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss climate diplomacy ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference, including enhancing global ambition through nationally determined contributions and the acceleration of the global transition from coal to clean energy.
In his intervention, Minister Asselborn praised President Biden’s decision for the United States to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement and emphasized Luxembourg’s commitment to its implementation. The nexus between climate change and security, as well as the main areas of cooperation with the EU that the Biden administration will focus on in the context of the fight against climate change, were also discussed.
