The film “RIVER TALES [CUENTOS DEL RÍO]”, directed by Luxembourg artist Julie Schroell, will be presented at this year’s all-virtual AFI European Union Film Showcase, which will take place from December 2 to 20.
This award winning film was selected to represent Luxembourg in the 2020 Oscar race "Best foreign language film" category. It is set along the banks of the San Juan River, in Nicaragua, where investors have been planning a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. While their families struggle with poverty, the kids of a riverside village, directed by a local actor and teacher, rehearse a play about the river’s history and the travelers that tried to control it. Around the play, they reflect on their identity and the future of their country
The film will be available starting December 16 and will be presented in Spanish, with English subtitles.
