International Holocaust Remembrance Day

As part of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27), Luxembourg National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights (MNR) will organize a virtual conference, followed by a discussion on the exhibition “Between shade and darkness”. On the same day, one Holocaust survivor and officials will take part in a commemoration ceremony in the town of Esch-sur-Alzette. Speeches will be made by the mayor, a minister representing the Government, and the president of the local Jewish community. The ceremony will be recorded and made available on MNR’s YouTube channel on 28 January 2022.

Other notable events to mark the day:

-          The Zentrum fir politesch Bildung Foundation, in partnership with Luxembourg Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, Luxembourg Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah and other organizations, will carry out multiple activities from January 17 to February 4, 2022.

-          JxJ, a multidisciplinary arts project that encompasses the Washington Jewish Film and Music Festivals, will organize a screening of the film Upheaval: The Journey of Menachem Begin, followed by a discussion on Thursday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Cafritz Hall (1529 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20036).

-          United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC will hold two virtual events:

On Wednesday, January 26, at 6 p.m. ET, a solemn ceremony will commemorate the lives of Europe’s Jews, who were targeted for annihilation, and other victims of Nazi persecution.

On Thursday, January 27, at 9:30 a.m. ET, a live, interactive discussion will feature the story of one Jewish toddler and the choices that led to his survival.

-          Multiple events organized by the United Nations: “Memory, Dignity and Justice”, notably the UN Holocaust Memorial Ceremony, which will be livestreamed on the UN Web TV.

-          Luxembourgish actress, singer and writer Adrienne Haan will give two performances of Tehorah, a musical story about war, loss, hope, love and forgiveness (on Thursday, January 27 in Łomża, Poland and on Saturday, February 12 at Schauspielhaus in Bergneustadt, Germany). Tehorah, which means “pure” in Hebrew, contains German, Yiddish and Hebrew songs written exclusively by Jewish composers and lyricists.

About the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27 is designated by the United Nations General Assembly as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD). Since 2005, the UN and its member states have held commemoration ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.
