European Capital of Culture: Remix in Esch 2022

Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg’s second largest city, is the designated European Capital of Culture in 2022 (Esch2022), sharing this title with Kaunas in Lithuania and Novi Sad in Serbia. The celebrations will kick off on Saturday, February 26, 2022 and will also incorporate ten other southern Luxembourg municipalities, plus eight French ones in the Haut Val de l’Alzette.

Each year the European Capitals of Culture label is awarded to a different city or area within the European Union. The initiative puts culture at the heart of European cities, celebrates the cultural features Europeans share and highlights the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe.

The program for this cultural year includes 160 projects and 2000 events, designed to “Remix Culture” around four major project themes in theater, dance, music and performance. They all aim to highlight the history, the traditions and the unique nature of the region, as well as the new influences of science and technology on art and culture. These initiatives are divided into four themes:

Remix Nature. Esch2022 encourages sustainability, not only in ecological but also in social terms. The many artistic projects and citizens’ initiatives are intended to collect ideas and show perspectives for a more sustainable coexistence.

Remix Art. The festival presents contemporary media art at the intersection of technology, science and society. This interface holds tremendous potential and shapes the world of tomorrow.

Remix Europe. Esch2022 will showcase the similarities and differences between the European cultures and countries – away from the stereotypes and towards the development of diversity and solidarity.

Remix yourself. Participation, co-creation and diversity are a central goal of Esch2022. There will be numerous exhibitions, concerts, performances and other activities, all revolving around the topic of identity.
