Luxembourg Embassy joined the Battle of the Bulge Association in St. Charles, Missouri
Deputy Chief of Mission Gilles Bauer was honored and humbled to join the veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, 80 years after the horrific fighting in the Luxembourg and Belgian Ardennes in the harsh winter of 1944-1945.
Along with Belgian DCM Sophie Karlshausen, DCM Bauer attended these fine gentlemen’s 42nd Annual meeting in St. Charles, Missouri. The DCMs of Luxembourg and Belgium expressed their countries' gratitude to the veterans who are now 99 to 102 years old. These touching moments are always filled with a lot of emotions and inspirational encounters.
It was a wonderful setting to mingle with them, their families, and friends. He thanked the Battle of the Bulge Association, Inc. for upholding the memory of their heroic fight which reestablished peace and security and ensured freedom, democracy, and prosperity for generations thereafter.
It was also a pleasure to have Congresswoman and former U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, Ann Wagner, join the wreath laying ceremony and address the attendance with a passionate and personal speech at the Battle of the Bulge monument at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
The Battle of the Bulge, one of the crucial battles of WWII and the bloodiest for U.S. forces with close to 20’000 soldiers lost, lasted from 16 December 1944 until 25 January 1945 and will be duly commemorated in Luxembourg and Belgium in December 2024 to honor the legacy of the U.S. and Allied forces. This heroic sacrifice will not be forgotten.
