Luc Frieden on a working visit to the West Coast
Prime Minister Luc Frieden visited Seattle and San Francisco from November 8 to 12 for a working visit focused on strengthening technological, scientific, and economic ties between Luxembourg and the United States.
The program focused on high-level meetings with leading institutions and companies, mainly in the digital sector, emphasizing strategic and geopolitical trends in artificial intelligence and innovation more generally.
Discussions with global technology companies such as Nvidia, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft provided an opportunity to explore the latest advances, discuss issues related to new technologies, and strengthen collaboration with one of the world's most dynamic innovation hubs.
“Strengthening European digital sovereignty is essential. But sovereignty cannot be equated with protectionism; it is synonymous with freedom of choice,” said the Prime Minister.
“Given the economic and societal opportunities offered by artificial intelligence, it is important to strengthen ties between Luxembourg and the United States, a key player in technology, by promoting strategic partnerships and creating synergies in a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic landscape.”
In this context, the Prime Minister also had the opportunity to meet with Condoleezza Rice and several renowned professors to discuss major current geopolitical issues relating to technology, defense, and energy at Stanford University's Hoover Institute, the birthplace of Silicon Valley. Still in Palo Alto, the visit continued with a meeting at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, where in-depth discussions took place on the societal implications of artificial intelligence.
The Prime Minister also met with representatives of venture capital funds to explore opportunities for collaboration and financing to support the development of strategic sectors such as digital technology and defense.
In addition to emphasizing artificial intelligence, the Prime Minister took advantage of his trip to the West Coast to confirm the government's ambitions in the space sector. The Prime Minister visited the American aerospace giant Boeing to reaffirm Luxembourg's close ties with key players such as SES, Cargolux, and Luxair.
In the same spirit, the Prime Minister was present at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Berkeley Space Center and the Interdisciplinary Center for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg, aimed at strengthening collaborative research and teaching in the field of space science and technology.
On November 11, Veterans Day, the Prime Minister met with Ken Mar, a US Army veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He awarded him the high decoration of Officer of the Order of Merit to pay tribute to him and all veterans for their commitment to serving our country and all of Europe.
